New! Minutes from the Friday October 6th Meeting

Welcome to the Dover School Club 2017/2018!  We are hoping to get all we need accomplished on a volunteer basis through parent participation.  You don’t have to attend the meetings to help or share your opinion!  Just email us and we will add your details and information to the proper event (this includes letting us know if you want to volunteer for a committee)!  Our email address is Club@doverschool.net .
Upcoming Dates/ Action Items
            •           Picture Day is Tuesday October 10thWe have all of the volunteers we need for this!  Thanks so much for all who offered to help!

            •           Halloween Festival will be Friday 10/27th Amanda Mola will head up this committee!  (Thanks Amanda!)  An idea was put out there that we might reserve the Dover Town Hall to have the Trunk or Treat outside in that parking lot, then move inside for the pot-luck supper.  (need to check with Town of Dover if the Hall is available this day).  The library has traditionally set up a movie for the kids to view that evening.  Having the pot-luck next door would allow the parents to converse and clean up while the kids are safely enjoying the movie next door.  Nothing has officially been decided on this yet so please provide your feedback! Amanda will organize a meeting or reach out via email to work out the details.  So far we have Amanda, Sara, Cordelia, Shira, Dianne and John Guminak dealing with this.  Tamara from the library would like to be involved as well.
•           The Ski Club is forming!  This year, Holly Veno has bravely stepped up to head and organize the ski club.  She and Michael Garber will work out the initial planning for ski lessons, parent volunteers, ski snack, potential bus service home, and free ski.  We need to review and set up our rules and expectations for this year.  We would like to hold our parent information meeting for sign ups and rentals by mid-October.  Holly will call a meeting on this shortly.  Who wants to join this team?  (For those that do not know, the ski program takes place on Thursdays from noon-3pm, dates to be announced shortly)

•           Introducing- The Winter Sports program (FOR NON- SKIIERS!) Per the request of parents of non-skiing children, the school will offer an out-door alternative to the ski program.  Our first priority is to encourage kids to ski, this program is for children who are extremely adamant that they do not like or want to ski.  Mount Snow is putting together a package/ proposal for us to review potential activities that will be offered.   We will be sending home a survey to find out how many children will participate.  Per the school board, this is considered an out-of-school activity (as is the ski program) therefore must be run and organized by a volunteer.  We really need a parent of a non-skiing child to help organize this.  Please consider volunteering!

            •           The Circus is coming to the Dover School!  (December 4-8) Dianne Guminak has procured an art grant from the state.  She has also applied for another grant from the Rotary.  This event will get the kids interested in a different kind of art- movement and expression through circus stunts!  A circus artist will come to our school for an entire week working with students to develop their skills.  There will be a performance to highlight the skills they’ve learned.
            •           The grant will cover close to half of the cost but we will probably be asking for a little bit of money per child (with a family cap limit ) and also doing some additional fundraising.
            •           There is also the potential to raise additional funds for circus equipment to use at the school after this residency (to continue the learning)  During the show we can man a booth that the artist has...selling circus equipment to interested families....and we would receive 15% of the sales to use towards equipment for the school. Who would like to help with this?

 •          Box Top Program Collecting Box Tops can net our school several hundred dollars per year!  We are having a contest in each class to see who can save the most for a small incentive (like an ice cream treat one day).  Luisa Oakley is organizing this program.  Please send in your box tops to class with your child.

Other items that are on the horizon later this year… Giving Tree (Christmas time), School Dance (spring), Joyful Noise (Spring), Field day (End of year), Art Day, Grandparents Day, Teacher Appreciation Day

Dover School Club 2017/2018 First Meeting Minutes!

Welcome to the Dover School Club 2017/2018!  There is no head of this organization and we will operate and govern through all of the members.  We are hoping to get all we need accomplished on a volunteer basis through parent participation.  We will list the main events that the school club sponsors and if it is near and dear to your heart, please volunteer to help on that committee!  You don’t have to attend the meetings to help or share your opinion!  Just email us and we will add your details and information to the proper event (this includes letting us know if you want to volunteer for a committee)!  Our email address is Club@doverschool.net .

Upcoming Dates/ Action Items
            •           Picture Day Will be Tuesday October 10th.  (usually in the AM from 9-11:30) We need 3-4 volunteers for this day to help line up students, do hair check, and help gather students.    We plan to only do photos one time this year, in the fall.  Who would like to help?

            •           Halloween Festival will be Friday 10/27thThis is our annual Trunk or Treat event where kids dress up in their favorite Halloween costume, trick or treat outside in the parking lot, then we all meet in the gym for pot luck dinner and games.  We all love this event!  Who wants to join this team!?  There’s only a month to plan!

            •           The Ski Club is forming!  This year, Holly Veno has bravely stepped up to head and organize the ski club.  We need to organize volunteers for ski lessons, ski snack, and free ski.  We need to review and set up our rules and expectations for this year.  We would like to hold our parent information meeting for sign ups and rentals by mid-October.  Holly will call a meeting on this shortly.  Who wants to join this team?  (I believe Michael Garber, Holly’s husband, and Heather Kelly have agreed to help here, and Jamie Alvarez has volunteered to run the backside movie night fund raiser!)  (For those that do not know, the ski program takes place on Thursdays from noon-3pm, dates to be announced shortly)

            •           Introducing- The Winter Sports program (FOR NON- SKIIERS!) The school is working to offer an alternative to the ski club.  Our first priority is to encourage kids to ski, this program is for children who are extremely adament that they do not like or want to ski.  I believe Mr. Martin is leading this committee, but we really need a few parent volunteers who do not ski at all to chaperone kids.  As with the ski program, this takes place Thursdays from Noon-2:30 pm.  Who would like to join?

            •           We are bringing the circus to the Dover School!  ( December 4-8) Dianne Guminak has obtained an art grant from the state for this residency!!!  This event will get the kids interested in a different kind of art- movement and expression through circus stunts!  A circus artist will come to our school for an entire week working with students to develop their skills.  There will be a performance to highlight the skills they’ve learned.  The grant will cover close to half of the cost but we will need to ask for maybe $10 per child (not bad for a week of circus school!) and maybe check with additional fund raising sources (like to Rotary club).  Who will volunteer to help Dianne make this happen?

            •           Box Top Program Collecting Box Tops can net our school several hundred dollars per year!  We would like to have a contest in each class to see who can save the most for a small incentive (like an ice cream treat one day).  Anyone want to throw in their name to adopt and organize this?

Hi Dover School Ski Folk,

I hope everyone is getting excited about skiing! The kids' ski passes should be in the mail to you this week (PLEASE send forms to Mt. Snow if you haven't, get gear worked out, etc. ;->>), the mountain is getting snowy, and January will be here before we know it...

A great opportunity to get in the mood is coming up a week from Thursdayon 12/15 -- Jaime Alvarez (Skyler's mom) has been amazing in bringing a "Backcountry Film Festival" fundraiser to the Snow Barn. This event will raise scholarship funds for the ski program. We were able to help many families this year and now it's time to re-fill the kitty for next year!

All the information about the event is here: http://www.mountsnow.com/events/calendar/backcountry-film-festival/

But the skinny is: pay $10 at the door (all door proceeds go to the scholarship fund!), and then hang out, order half price pizza for you and the kiddos, and watch the show -- pilots from 7 Backcountry films that will be released in 2017. This is a totally family-friendly event! There will be a raffle with some great prizes, so it promises to be a fun night.

The Snow Barn is also allowing us to do a bake sale (I know my kids will be happy to get a treat after pizza!!). We are looking for people who can help man the table and/or send in baked goods. If you can't make the event, you can drop baked goods at school on Weds 12/14 or Thurs 12/15 and Jaime will pick them up and bring them to the Snow Barn. Please let me know if you can help with baked goods!! All are much appreciated. There is also a signup sheet at school by Lori's office (it's on the far left).

Hope to see many faces at the Snow Barn next week! It's a great way to get together while raising money that helps all Dover School kids be able to ski.

Thinking snow,

Meg Staloff

Halloween Festival
Friday October 28

5:30-8:00pm
This year, we have exciting new changes to our annual Halloween celebration!  Students, parents, grandparents and caregivers are all invited to the Dover School for an evening of fun, food, and laughter!  We will start out in the school parking lot for our beloved “Trunk or Treat”.  Children and parents alike are encouraged to dress up in your best Halloween costume while you go from car to car collecting treats!  This year we are having a real-life CLUE game during this event so be sure to spend some time talking to your neighbors and looking for clues!  Show your Halloween Spirit by decorating your vehicle or trunk!  Prizes will be awarded for the following categories this year:
Best Dressed vehicle (or trunk)                    Prettiest Costume
Funniest Costume                                           Spookiest Costume
Most Creative Costume                                  Best Dressed Visitor (new this year!)
Best Over-All Costume- EVERYONE gets to vote on this one so be on the lookout for your favorite!

After the Trunk or Treat event, we are keeping the party going inside!  Join us for a neighborhood Pot Luck Supper of finger foods and fall treats!  We will be serving warm apple cider as well.  In this packet please find the sign-up sheet and tell us what you would like to bring!  There will be fun games and crafts going on to keep the kids busy while the parents take it all in.  Please bring in your carved pumpkins for us to light up the walkways with your works of art!  Also new this year, we will have a cool picture station where you get to make memories in your amazing costumes in front of our “green screen”.  We can then super-impose spooky backgrounds for that perfect Halloween look!  There will be a small fee for the pictures and proceeds will go to the Dover School Club.  If you would like to help with the games, crafts, photos or the cleanup, please contact us at: club@doverschool.net.

We hope you are as excited as we are!  We hope to get lots of participation!  Let’s make this event the start of another great tradition at the Dover School!
